Cultivate Summer Workshop Series · Session #2
"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness."
— COLOSSIANS 2:6-7
Welcome Mama! Whether you're just exploring, new to homeschooling, or a seasoned homeschool mama, welcome to our second workshop in the Cultivate summer series!
My hope and desire for you is that this workshop will refresh and encourage you as we learn, grow and cultivate the soil of our hearts. Mom life is busy with little "me" time so as we open the Word, let's discover what it means to be Rooted in Truth and dig deep to weed out all of the things that we allow to take root in our hearts that hinder our growth.
Let's pray.
Cultivate: A deep sense of churning, digging and breaking up of soil.
A recap from Sowing on Good Soil: Soil Matters!
Roots grow first and are the foundation for healthy growth.
A seed has no chance of developing unless it becomes rooted first.
When a seed is planted, growth is unseen first.
Homeschool Mom Application
When the soil (your heart) is prepared, God can grow something internal before the external is visible. Something begins to happen beneath the surface. Growing roots produce shoots that develop when exposed to the light (God's Truth).
Life Application
Like roots are essential for growth in a plant, the Truth (the Word of God) helps us to:
Being rooted in truth means having a firm foundation and anchoring ourselves in the unchanging Word of God and what He says is true.
Being Rooted in Truth helps us:
A plant that has been sown in good soil will struggle if the weeds creep in around it. Weeds compete with the plant for the very same things it needs to grow.
Comparison
Takes our eyes off of what God is cultivating in our garden and puts them on someone else's.
Truth: God has uniquely equipped me for the children He has entrusted to me.
Fear
Allows the "What if" questions creep in. "What if I mess this up?" "What if my child falls behind?" "What if I'm not capable?" Fear can keep us from confidently trusting that God is leading and cause us to not move forward.
Truth: God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. — 2 Timothy 1:7
Perfectionism
Causes us to strive for unattainable outcomes. It can make our homeschool journey become performance based.
Truth: I don't have to be a perfect homeschool mom. I just need to be a faithful one.
Doubt
Questions ourselves, "Maybe I really can't do this." Think about how a plant doesn't question whether it belongs to the soil. It simply grows where it's been planted.
Truth: Instead of questioning ourselves and what God is calling us to do, we should ask, "Is God enough?" and remember that with God all things are possible. — Matthew 19:26
Unrealistic Expectations
The way we allow our homeschool journey to be perceived in our minds can hinder our growth even if it comes from a good desire to do well. "If I plan well enough, my homeschooling experience will go smoothly every day." Over time, just as a weed competes with a plant for the resources it needs to grow, unrealistic expectations compete with the truth God wants to establish in us. Real life happens…meltdowns, interruptions, sickness, bad attitudes, lessons that don't work, etc. What expectation do you need to surrender so that you can make room for God's grace?
Truth: God has a perfect plan, and He is working to establish something in you too through your homeschool journey. Trust Him with the outcome.
Outside Voices
Everyone has an opinion! Whether it's good or bad, others will have something to say that can either help or hinder you. Oftentimes, we let the opinions of others (especially people who are closest to us) dictate how we perceive ourselves or how we should do things. Negativity can take root in our hearts if we let it and cause us to focus on the bad rather than the good.
Truth: God's voice is the only voice you should be listening to when it comes to your gifting and calling. The more you are rooted in the Truth the more you will be able to recognize what He says about you.
What weeds need to be pulled?
A weed I need to identify:
A weed I need to release:
A truth I need to plant in its place:

Look closely at the roots of this tree. They are not neat. They are twisted, exposed, weathered, broken-looking and some are even going in different directions yet, they are still doing their job. Roots don't grow in perfectly straight lines and neither does our growth in homeschooling, motherhood and our faith. Growth can be messy and still be growth.
The roots of this tree have had to navigate rocks, soil, water and everything else around them. They didn't have a perfectly prepared path and yet they simply kept growing. Deep roots help you to navigate what's around you but just because a plant or tree has deep roots doesn't mean that everything growing around it is helping it. Weeds are toxic, get rid of them!
Just as a healthy plant with deep roots doesn't merely survive — it bears fruit and overflows with life — a heart rooted in Truth naturally overflows with thankfulness. When we pull the weeds and plant God's Word deep, gratitude has room to grow.
Overflowing with thankfulness in our homeschool looks like:
May the roots of your heart be firmly and deeply planted in the Truth, so you have the strength to stand and flourish right where God has called you.
A simple way to grow together with your little ones.
Plant a Seed & Talk About Roots
Take away thought for your child:
Sometimes God is growing things in our hearts that other people can't see.
Take away for Mama:
Over the next several weeks, let your child tend to and observe the seed. Talk about what may be happening underneath the soil.
Bible Memory Verse for Kids
You are rooted and built up in Jesus. — Colossians 2:7
